Greenlipped mussel and asthma treatment

GREEN LIPPED MUSSEL EFFECTIVE FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHILDREN’S ASTHMA

An Auckland-based New Zealand study published in the Internet Journal of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology discovered that green lipped mussel (GLM) oil is effective in the treatment of Asthma in Children.

A total of 71 children aged 6 to 13 years were enrolled in a 16-week single centre, double-masked, placebo-controlled, parallel group trial and randomly assigned to receive either GLM oil or placebo (two capsules twice daily). Patients were maintained on as-needed beta-agonist therapy and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) throughout the study.

It was concluded that after as little as three months of treatment of the oral standardised lipid extract of New Zealand GLMs a significant number of participants in the study reported little to no signs of asthma.

The study also concluded that the ingestion of lipid extract is safe for children and recommended a more comprehensive study to further understand the benefits of GLM oil and how it can be used in other treatments.

Similar finding were reported some years ago in a study of adults conducted by the Hospital Therapeutic Clinic at the Pavlov Medical University in St Petersburg, Russia. This study found that the treatment of volunteers aged 18-56 who had mild to moderate atopic asthma reported reduced daytime wheeze and improved morning symptoms of asthma compared to those on the placebo.

The GLM has been known to reduce inflammation, protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, reduce the effects of arthritis, minimise the effects of free radicals and assist with general anti-aging.

The GLM is also loaded with proteins, omega 3s, lipids, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, nutrients and other minerals which make it a super food and a recommended daily supplement.

At the conclusion of the New Zealand study it was found only two children suffered from a side effect. This consisted of generalises itching for one (GLM) and the exacerbation of pre-existing eczema of another (placebo).

The dependent of our children on prescription medicine for the treatment of Asthma is on the rise. Safe, natural and effective alternatives such as the extract of the NZ GLM should form part of every parent’s arsenal when tackling common ailments such as asthma.
